Why sitting can aggravate a sore back
Sitting is not harmful in itself, but staying still in one position for a long time can make an already irritated back more sensitive. Vibration, a seat that is too low or reclined, and reaching for pedals or controls can all add to it. Many people notice the pain most when they first stand up after a long stretch.
That first stiffness on standing usually eases within a few steps. If instead it is getting steadily worse over weeks, or pain is spreading further down the leg, book an assessment rather than waiting it out.
Seat set-up to try now
These are general suggestions, not a substitute for assessment. If any of them makes your pain worse, stop:
- Sit so your hips are level with or slightly above your knees
- Bring the seat close enough that your knees stay slightly bent at full pedal travel
- Keep the backrest only slightly reclined, with support in the curve of your lower back
- Take a short break to stand and walk on long trips when it is safe to stop
How your chiropractor assesses driving-related pain
At your first visit, about an hour, tell your chiropractor how long you sit or drive each day, what kind of vehicle or seat you use, and whether pain spreads into the buttock or leg. The examination covers posture, spinal and hip movement, muscle testing and leg nerve tests. Ergonomic advice is a standard part of the clinic's treatment plans, alongside any hands-on care.
When pain travels into the leg
Pain, pins and needles or numbness into the leg can mean a nerve is irritated. That is usually managed conservatively, but your chiropractor will test nerve function carefully. Worsening weakness, or numbness around the groin with bladder or bowel changes, needs urgent medical care — do not drive yourself if your leg is weak.
Questions to ask at your report of findings
At your second visit, about 30 minutes, you will hear what your chiropractor found. Useful questions include:
- What is the likely source of my pain?
- How long should I expect before I notice change, and what if I do not?
- What can I change about sitting and driving in the meantime?
- What are the risks of the treatment you recommend?
After a long drive
If your back is sore when you arrive somewhere, take a minute before lifting anything. Stand up slowly, walk for a few minutes and gently move your back through a comfortable range. Avoid unloading heavy items straight after a long stretch of sitting, when the back often feels at its stiffest.
