Westmead Station, the T1 and two buses
The clinic is about 12 km by road from the middle of Westmead. One direct route follows Hawkesbury Road and then the Great Western Highway. Westmead Station is served by T1 Western Line and T5 Cumberland Line services, and both lines also stop at Blacktown. Two bus routes run to Blacktown Station as well. Route 705 (Blacktown to Parramatta via Pendle Hill) stops at Westmead Hospital and at Westmead Station on Alexandra Avenue. Route 711 stops at Alexandra Avenue opposite Westmead Station and at Westmead Childrens Hospital on Hawkesbury Road. From Blacktown Station, it is about a kilometre on foot.
Apartment living and Saturday mornings
At the 2021 Census, flats or apartments made up 75.9% of occupied private dwellings in Westmead. The median age at the 2021 Census was 33. Professionals made up 43.4% of employed residents at the 2021 Census. If your working week is full, Saturday mornings from 8am to 12pm are one option. At the 2021 Census, 6.1% of employed residents travelled to work by train alone, though the Census was held during COVID-19 lockdowns. With Westmead Station on the T1 line, the train is one way to reach Blacktown without a car.
From the Western Meadow to the hospitals
Westmead takes its name from the Western Meadow of the governor’s domain, subdivided from 1859 along with the Northern Meadow that became Northmead. Westmead Hospital, a University of Sydney teaching hospital, opened in November 1978. Westmead Station is also the terminus of the L4 Westmead & Carlingford light rail line, which opened on 20 December 2024. If you work at the hospital, route 705 stops there and runs to Blacktown Station. The clinic’s weekday session from 3pm to 7pm may fit after a shift. The suburb is split between the City of Parramatta and Cumberland Council.
