Pregnancy back, pelvic and hip pain: how we can help

As your baby grows, your posture, centre of gravity and ligaments all change. Many people notice lower back pain, pain around the pelvis or pubic bone, hip and buttock discomfort, or upper back and neck tension from changes in sleep and feeding preparation.

These symptoms are common, but they are not something you simply have to put up with. An assessment can help clarify what is going on and what may help.

Lower back pain

Lower and upper back pain: likely causes, what an assessment looks for and how care is planned.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a chiropractor, and one of the most common reasons Australians miss work. Most episodes are not caused by serious damage, but they can be painful and worrying.

Hip and pelvic discomfort

Shoulders, hips, knees, hands and feet: how we assess joint pain and what care may help.

Joint pain can creep up slowly or arrive after an injury. Our clinic assesses and treats joints beyond the spine, including shoulders, hands, hips, knees, ankles and feet, and will tell you honestly when another option is more appropriate.

Upper back and neck tension

Stiff, sore or painful necks (including after whiplash), with careful assessment and gentle options.

A stiff or sore neck can make driving, working at a screen and sleeping feel like hard work. Neck pain is common and usually settles, but an assessment can help when it lingers, keeps returning or follows an injury.

Your care, step by step

Stage 1 of 2

What to bring and wear

Wear comfortable, loose clothing and bring your pregnancy health record if you have one, along with details of your midwife, GP or obstetrician. Let reception know how many weeks pregnant you are when booking. Your appointment will allow time for a careful history and positioning adjustments, and you are welcome to bring a partner or support person.

How we approach pregnancy care

Your first visit includes a detailed history covering your pregnancy, any complications and your maternity care team. Your chiropractor examines how you move and where symptoms come from, then explains what they suggest and why.

How treatment is adapted

Treatment is adapted to each stage of pregnancy. That can mean side-lying positions, supportive cushions, lower-force techniques such as drop table or instrument-assisted adjustments, gentle mobilisation, soft tissue work and simple exercises you can do at home.
